The reasons so many young people are walking away from Christianity are obvious: shifting culture, ineffective youth ministry, college professors, government hostility, and the entertainment industry—right? Wrong.
When I first heard the word “missions,” I imagined someone in a third-world country, suffering from lack of resources, and sleeping on the ground. I thought it was about being physically uncomfortable for the sake of the gospel. Unbelievers in my life would emphasize the lack of money. Believers would tell me stories of Lottie Moon or Adoniram Judson and how more than physical suffering can come from missions. I saw missions as an elite calling on someone’s life, for the super-spiritual. But as I grew in my walk with the Lord, I saw how it is a calling on every believer’s life. I saw how it is integrated into the mundane.
How is it possible that summer has already come upon us! Well, it has been about two months since my last post, and that was not intentional, but with COVID-19 and my wife having a baby, it brought a little delay to my writing. Sorry about that!
Today is a hot topic in ministry right now, should I host a summer camp digitally or not this summer. Trust me, I have looked at that option for my ministry and understand the pros and cons of doing a digital summer camp. About two weeks ago, I put together the full gameplan to pull off a digital summer camp. In our blog today, I would like to walk you through how to pull off a digital summer camp if that is something you are interested in, but not sure how to pull it off.
The weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer which means Summer is finally approaching. This means that Summer camps are right around the corner as well. There are a lot of Summer camps out there that you can send your youth group to, but the one that I have always gone to is Crossroads Summer Camp. I could go on and on about how much fun I had as a teenager those weeks, but that wouldn’t answer the question why you should go to summer camp. Here are three main reasons why I think that you and your youth should go:
All across America Student Ministries begin to plan for the summer months of ministries. Some ministries will see students head off to vacation, beach homes, and spend time away with family. During the summer month’s ministries begin to plan out a busy schedule trying to reach students with camps, events, and other fun creations.
I was asked about a month or so ago if I could write a blog on how to pull off an awesome retreat weekend. I know that for many of us put on Disciple Now weekends, Middle School or High School retreats throughout the year. If we were to break down the DNA of those weekends, what would be the purpose or goals of those weekends? The goal of those weekends should always be to accomplish one of these two things, evangelize to your students or spiritually grow your students. Outside of these two those weekends, you plan Disciple Now, or other retreats should not be used for anything else. I have written down five things that I consider vital to pulling off a life-changing retreat.
Recently I have been thinking about leadership and studying different models of leadership within local churches. Now, I know you are thinking “oh no! Another Leadership blog and article.” I can promise that this blog aims to look at developing a culture of leadership within your ministry among your student population.
The following list is in no specific order, but these are books that we think you need to read as a Youth Pastor. Every Quarter we will update the reading lists, but these are the first five books we recommend for any Youth Pastor to read. Disclaimer: Not all books were written or published in the last two years, but are books we think will help you as a Pastor.
