Whispering Spot

Whispering Spot

Recently I've been thinking about the whispering spot at the US Capitol building. Growing up in Delaware I would make many visits to the US Capitol building in DC. Especially because my mother is a huge history person and would take us to learn about all these different American historical moments in history. On one of my trips to tour the Capitol with either my parents or on a school field trip I came into Statuary Hall where there is a plaque on the ground for John Quincy Adams. It was rumored that he would fall asleep at his desk while serving in congress and listen to the other parties’ conversations because the acoustics where his desk had allowed him to hear everything. Whether this rumor is true or not, may never be proved, but we do know that the Capitol has a whispering spot where someone on the other side of the room can whisper something and you can hear them better than if they were next to you.

I share my experience at the Capitol because it has caused me to think about how God speaks into our lives daily. Standing in that corner at the Capitol building amongst all the noise of tourist walking through the Statuary you can hear clearly the person whispering across the room.

I believe that God speaks daily into our life amongst the noise around us but let me go one step further. I personally believe that in my own life there has been whispering spots where God has spoken into my life and has led to major growth moments in my life. For example, in seminary there was a table at Starbucks on the left when you walk that has since been turned into a booth, but in that whispering spot I wrote commentary on 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, James, Philippians, Ephesians, Colossians, and Galatians for my quiet time. It was at that Starbucks that God started a revival in my life.

Why do I share about my Whispering Spot?

Because I want to challenge you in these three ways:

  1.  Find a Whispering Spot- Find a place where you can go to regularly to pray and listen to God speak into your life.

  2. Come prepared to listen- Once you have found your whispering spot, start off every moment there with prayer. Ask God to speak into your life and that your heart will be open to hear His Word.

  3.  Respond to God- When God speaks to you through His Word and in your whispering spot, respond faithfully to what He is calling you to do. It is imperative for us to not just read God’s word or to pray, but we must respond to what God is calling for us to do.
